Vibrant, fresh expressions of living a Christian spiritual path in the Anglican (Episcopal) tradition are popping up around the country. Becky Garrison, author of Ancient Future Disciples shares the big picture of varied communities she’s met across the country, while Reverend Judith Liro of St. Hildegard’s Community in Austin, and Carol Bradsen of Mariposa Community in Tucson tell stories from their own context. St. Hildegard’s and the Mariposa Community, both featured in the book, are rooted in contemplative practice, transformative community and calls to social justice. After Becky reads from her new book, religion writer Eileen Flynn will moderate a panel discussion including a conversation with those attending. Refreshments both savory and sweet from Sweetish Hill will be served.

Earlier in November we had chosen Guadalupe’s Feast  to experiment with offering a public liturgy, one that we publicized, where we focused on welcoming visitors.  Gretchen and I designed bookmarks and had them printed to pass out at the ‘Chant for Peace’ and ‘Women and Fair Trade’ events held the weekend of November 11-13th.

This year St. Hildegard's chose to be one of the sponsors for the Women and Fair Trade Festival in order to support the groups of women who come to Austin from their faraway cooperatives bringing their products and giving us glimpses into their struggles and successes. These women-led communities are involved in the kind of work that makes our world more beautiful and our knowledge of helping one another more encompassing.  We at St. Hildegard's also work for similar goals in Austin in our own way which is one of the reasons for supporting the Women and Fair Trade Festival.

A Community Day of Fasting

This August the Pool of Siloam at St. Hildegard's invites you to join us in a community day of fasting.

Christians, Jews, and Muslims are all descendants of Abraham making us all brethren and sistren in faith. Rather than looking our differences lets look at our similarities. It is easy for people on the fringes of all these religions to point fingers, accuse the other of insensitivity and atrocities, but this does little to mend fences and heal our wounds. Fundamentalists of each of the Abrahamic faiths are guilty of hijacking their religions and continue to drive a wedge between each of the faiths. This year let's stand in faith together. We propose a 1-day fast in solidarity with Muslims who are about to enter Ramadan.

wildgoose_sm“In adopting the image of the Wild Goose we recognize that in the current climate of religious, social and political cynicism, embracing the creative and open nature of our faith is perhaps our greatest asset for re-building and strengthening our relationships with each other, with our enemies, with our stories, our texts, and the earth. In that spirit, in a festive setting, and in the context of meaningful, respectful, and sustained relationships, we invite you to create with us!”

Abundance

During Easter Week five of us from St. Hildegard’s participated in a conference held at Trinity University in San Antonio called “Our Abundant Communities: Neighborly Nourishment in the Wilderness.”  One of the speakers, Biblical scholar, Walter Brueggemann, said that we are all ordained in scarcity mode. Biblical faith imagines an alternative that is based in shared grateful abundance.  Showing what this could look like, another speaker, John McKnight, taught community development based on gifts rather than deficiencies.

Emptiness in Lent

Saturday, 02 April 2011 19:23

A famous professor full of knowledge and strong opinions comes to a Zen master for instruction. The Zen master welcomes the guest and offers a small cup, then begins to pour tea. When the cup is full, the master continues to pour for several minutes and the tea spills out and runs over. The distinguished visitor is dumbfounded. The master calmly explains, “Like the cup you are already full of your own opinions. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?”

Silent Retreats

Wednesday, 15 December 2010 19:23

St. Hildegard’s Community has two 3-day silent retreats each year, one in Advent and another one during Lent. On some years we’ve had almost 20 retreatants; at other times as few as 6. Whether the number is large or small, having these times during the Liturgical Year anchors the community in a spirit of listening and openness. Silent Retreats are good for our soul, both communally and personally.
